Holidays

Well, Mikl and I are currently in the middle of an overseas holiday:

Paris, Grenoble, Briancon, Grenoble, Lausanne, Frankfurt, Goettingen, the forest somewhere near Nurnberg, Pirna, Dresden, and I am currently in Berlin. Most of the trip has been climbing, and eating and drinking. I think I need to go on a diet, although for my current heavier form I seem to be climbing quite well.

Climbing in France was great, the Frankenjura was enjoyable as always, and climbing in the Elbesandstein on greasy towers without chalk or gear was suitably scary but actually not that dissimilar to Sydney sea cliff climbing, so I felt a little bit at home. I am a bit over pork and potatoes though, no matter how yummy and close to the concentration limit of fat in a food substance it gets. I had the fattiest meal that I have ever eaten in Briancon (big call, I know) at a place called, um, don't remember - St something, anyway, a meat plate - half a rabbit, two duck breasts, a T-bone and a sirloin steak, chicken, a spatchcock, lamb chops, a big piece of pork - with an assortment of fatty sauces made from oil and cream, and a vegetable dish consisting of potatoes au gratin with a ragout of veges - eggplant and zucchini etc in a vat of oil, all covered in cheese, with deep fried mash potato swirls. Very, very, nice, but i thought my heart was going to stop for a while, but surprisingly, I am still alive. We climbed a 400m route via a traversing method (we were on the wrong route and traversed almost the entire cliff to get back on route resulting in a 20 pitch climb) and when we got back to the ground I remembered that i had one of the duck breasts that i couldn't eat but couldn't bring myself to throw away stashed in my bag, so ripped into, and thought to myself what a weired thing to be doing. eating more meat than you possibly could, climbing 20 pitches, then eating some more meat for good measure. I was also surprised by how tasty and good the warm duck breast that had been in my bag overnight and all day was.

A bit of work was mixed in to our trip - i spent a few days each working in Lausanne, in Goettingen, and in Berlin. All in all a great trip so far. We are off to Cologne tomorrow (well, i am, Mikl is already there), then we pick up some friends in the Combi van and drive to Fontainbleau and onto Barcelona, then flying to Malaga. Singapore on the way home for a few days to eat some spicy food that does not contain pork or potatoes (I may be all out of p food groups by the time I return) and back to Sydney. 3 days later I head to a conference in South Korea that somehow I forgot about when I booked the holiday.

Photos to come later!...
